Reimagining sports story-telling, perspective and celebration for a 21st century audience.
Available on U.S. newsstands within days of the April 3 NCAA Championship game, SPORT magazine’s most recent edition - with three distinct covers for collectors - pays tribute to the transcendent UConn Huskies. Filled with details and beautiful photography from all 39 Huskies 2022-23 games, including their dominant six-game March Madness march, the 96-page issue includes feature pieces on Dan Hurley’s coaching family, NCAA MVP Adama Sanogo’s unique odyssey and traces the rich history and tradition that has led UConn to five national titles in the past 25 years and a claim as the team of the early 21st century. A must-have for every passionate Huskies fan!
In February, SPORT magazine saluted the resurgent Kansas City Chiefs, tracing their championship season from the first game through their dramatic 38-35 comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 12, 2023, in which Patrick Mahomes claimed his second MVP and the Chiefs their second Super Bowl in four seasons. Included is a bonus SPORT Remembers… section celebrating the heroes of the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl IV win in 1970.
After a 22-year hiatus, SPORT magazine made a triumphant return to the nation’s newsstands in late 2022 and early 2023 with the release of six special editions. In addition to the NCAA Championship and Super Bowl editions, our most recent publications, in partnership with A360 Media, include a commemorative edition of SPORT celebrating the Houston Astros’ 2022 World Series Championship, and a colourful tribute to the late soccer legend, Pele, who passed away Dec. 29, 2022.
Once, when the world was a smaller place, the big stories and characters in sport resonated with a larger-than-life quality that somehow transcended the analog communication platforms and challenges of the day. Today, amidst the cacophony of the 24/7 digital and social-driven news and event cycle, the noise seems constant and unrelenting.
At SPORT Media Entertainment, we are reimagining sport story-telling, perspective and celebration in a new way for a 21st century audience. We are working with partners to develop an approach that frames the stories and individuals that will resonate over time and space, and present them in a context that fully assesses and accounts for the larger picture.
The original SPORT magazine was founded in 1946 as America’s first significant general interest national sports magazine, pioneering many of the innovative approaches and concepts that Sports Illustrated and others later emulated, and was an American institution from the post-World War II period until the dawn of the digital age.
Even at its closing in 2000, SPORT was still reaching two-plus million subscribers per month. Its rich archive, and that of Inside Sports, (another ground-breaking monthly that launched in 1979 and merged with SPORT in 1998) were acquired and preserved to eventually share with, and inspire, a new audience.
In early 2022, Sport Media Entertainment was launched to help reimagine sport story-telling, journalism and celebration for a social media-driven 21st century audience.
The SPORT Collection draws on the extensive editorial archives of SPORT and Inside Sports magazine. Comprised of more than 150,000 images of the most prominent athletes and sport figures from 1946 through 2000, the photo collection includes thousands of never-before-seen images from creative shoots featuring hundreds of Hall of Famers, other prominent sports stars and celebrities.
Among those stars are nearly 100 winners of the SPORT MVP Award – the official post-season MVP award for each of the four major team sports beginning with the first World Series MVP in 1955 and running through the late 1980s. Also included are several hundred SPORT Athlete of the Year and SPORT Hall of Fame members, the latter representing the most prominent multi-sport hall of fame ever established.
The SPORT magazine editions featured above followed an earlier tribute SPORT magazine to the late Roberto Clemente, marking the 50th anniversary of his untimely passing, and a Fantasy Football edition. We also partnered with A360 on an Inside Sports Football Betting Preview. Other recent projects include digital and film content partnerships with ESPN and Uninterrupted celebrating Jackie Robinson.
The coming months will see additional announcements supporting the rebirth of SPORT, in platforms as diverse as NFTs, the metaverse, AR/VR applications, branding and merchandising, documentary film development and production, digital distribution and podcasts.
